My Digital Space-Personal

While making my digital map, I realized that I do not actually use as many apps as I thought I did. A lot of the apps that I use overlap between personal and professional. I tend to spend most of my personal time on streaming apps like Hulu or Disney+. This is usually on the weekends or anytime that I am off work. I also check my email but only when necessary. I tend to use Gmail for personal but also use Comcast for more professional exchanges. I also check my social media accounts daily as well as my text messages when something comes through. I tend to watch YouTube when there is a break or when I need to find a video of something that will help with work.

 

My Digital Space-Professional

For my work in the library, I tend to spend most of my time on Baker & Taylor ordering books. I also use it to keep up to date with new releases and what is anticipated to be the best sellers or best recommended books for the year. I also use it to see what is still in print and what has gone out of print. I only check my work email on Outlook while I am at work. I also only use Pinterest at work to help find ideas for future programs or crafts that the teens I work with might want to do. I only use blogger while I am in classes but visit quite a few blogs while I am searching for programs and crafts as well. When I work at the conventions, I tend to check my social media pretty often to keep up to date with what is going on at the convention as well as who is supposed to be there, when, and what the person has been up to in the last few years. I also tend to follow the person afterwards in case there is a future connection that needs to be made. I use YouTube to check to see what the person I am assigned to has been in and sometimes watch a few interviews to get a sense of what the person is like. Depending on the convention, I use iMessage or WhatsApp to keep in touch with the agent and my boss as well as who I have been assigned to. I am also part of a group chat of handlers in order to make sure that I can get what is needed at the moment whether it is requesting security come to the guest’s booth or letting someone know I need to go on a break for one reason or another. It also allows me to put in requests for the guest that might not get answered in a timely manner by the agent or my boss.

 

My Response

Nothing really surprised me since I don’t really spend much time on apps. I prefer physical media and otherwise spend down time playing video games. Weekends and evenings my usage does go up a little bit because I am looking for something to watch or checking in on family and friends on social media.

    My usage of apps and online content is very similar to yours and I had a hard time associating if I was a Resident or a Visitor. Did you have a hard time as well or were you able to discern which term fit you best? These terms depend on how you see the community while using these apps. I, personally, find that I have more community on my professional behalf as I use apps/websites with my coworkers and students so I would be a Resident there. For personal, it is harder for me. Great post!

It was definitely harder to figure out where I was a Resident or Visitor on the apps that I use for both work and personal since often I see myself as just a visitor on Instagram when really I am keeping up to date on what people I have worked with have done between conventions which makes me more of a resident. It was confusing especially when I considered that job and the community that is there since it bleeds between professional and personal but for my library job as well as my personal time it was a lot easier.
